Not using a screen protector

The aluminium Apple Watch's screen uses ION-X glass which is similar to Gorilla Glass, where as the higher-end Apple Watch Ultra, uses sapphire glass. These type of glass are very strong and scratch-resistant. However, it's not indestructible. Using a screen protector will definitely help keep your Apple Watch looking like new. Changing the screen protector regularly will also extend the watch life.

Not using a protective case

The Apple Watch series 8's body is made from aluminium and the Apple Watch Ultra is titanium. Generally they are durable, but nothing is completely immune to damage. Using a protective case will help to protect your watch from scratches, dings, and other types of damage.

Choosing the wrong band material

There are many different band materials you can choose to match with your Apple Watch. There are bands made from leather, ceramic, silicon, metal and many more. Each type of material serves a different purpose. Before you purchase your Milanese loop or Leather band for your Apple Watch, you need to consider your lifestyle. Stainless steel bands are strong and capable of resisting dents, suitable for heavy duty occasions. If you have an active sporty lifestyle then you can go for silicon sport bands.

Not keeping your device clean

Apple Watches are exposed to a lot of sweat, dirt, and grime throughout the day. Just think about all the places you've been through over the last week, for example public transport, construction sites, toilets, restaurants and you'll quickly realise it can get dirty pretty quick. Be sure to clean your device regularly to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria which might cause skin irritation or damage the watch's components.

Water resistant but not resistant to other types chemicals

The Apple Watch Series 8 is water resistant up to 50 meters so it might seem like you can wear it in the shower without any issues, but unfortunately, Apple advises against doing so.

While the occasional shower won't do much harm, using soaps and shampoos can gradually weaken the watch's water resistance over time. These products can cause the seals on the watch to break down, which can allow water to seep in.

So, it's best to avoid wearing your Apple Watch while you're shampooing your hair, doing the dishes, or participating in other water-related activities that could expose it to soap or other chemicals.

Not Backing up your watch

Your Apple Watch stores a lot of important data, like fitness and health data, messages, and contacts. Make sure to regularly back up your watch to protect your data in case of lost or stolen device.

Not keeping your software updated

Apple releases software updates for the Apple Watch regularly. These updates always include bug fixes to the latest exploits and new features. Make sure you're keeping your watch updated to take advantage of the latest improvements and protect from security vulnerabilities.

Just remember to clean your Apple Watch regularly, handle it with care, avoid chemicals and stay updated with the latest software. Putting in a little bit of effort each day will help your Apple Watch last for years.
